Alley 12.7 — Vinnytsia, Southern Buh
Climate change and its consequences
Alley 12.7 is the code project name of the Southern Buh territory within the boundaries of the city of Vinnytsia. Its length is 12.7 kilometres, which is exactly why it is called Alley 12.7.
Location:
Vinnytsia
Period:
2022–2023
Type:
Study
What was done?
Map of Alley 12.7 zones
For local stakeholders, we narrowed the number of options for the development of the territory along the Southern Buh in Vinnytsia. We analysed data from different sectors to answer the question “To build up or leave wild?”.
We analysed hydrology, climatology, landscapes, and biodiversity. Then, we developed a single scale considering all the features of these sectors. Thus, 21 zones were identified, and two options for appropriate actions within the “Preservation” or “Activation” scenarios were provided for each.
This is a rather objective framework compared to other existing studies in Vinnytsia to work further on specific projects along Alley 12.7.

Some interesting facts
Pavement is the major enemy
Almost definitely, this area will face less precipitation and higher temperatures in the future. Therefore, the main enemy of the Alley is pavement.
A network of small rivers
In addition to the Southern Buh, Vinnytsia has a network of 64 small rivers constituting one system.
Legend homeland
This is the exact birthplace of Edik the tadpole (from local “Vinnytsiavodokanal” legends)

21 zones
To determine nature protection solutions or solutions for recreational development of Alley 12.7, 21 zones were identified. Each has certain peculiarities of natural conditions, modern ecological state, and involvement in human activities. At the same time, these zones have their own set, configuration, and ratio of habitats according to the degree of preservation of the natural state and sensitivity to climate changes.
The general principle of zone decisions is as follows: the most valuable and most sensitive to climate change zones are classified as those subject to protection under both scenarios. Transformed and anthropogenic habitats are subject to renaturalisation, though according to Scenario 2, their parallel use for the development of recreational infrastructure is allowed.
